The Household Division Scarlet and Gold

The annual showcase winter concert for the world-renowned bands of the Household Division, ‘Scarlet & Gold,’ was held at the Cadogan Hall, London, and War Horse Memorial was lucky enough to get an invitation… While the title evokes the ceremonial splendour and sparkle of the Guards’ uniforms and instruments, the programme of music guaranteed something to delight everyone in a truly world-class performance.

It featured the best musicians from across the Division in an array of musical extravagance, and included the Bands of the Household Cavalry, perhaps more familiar for their role as mounted bands, Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Welsh Guards, joined by the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra – bringing music from the parade square to the stage.

The musical programme covered a diverse range of sensational music, old and new, upbeat and reflective, something to suit all tastes. It included scores from the Hollywood blockbusters, The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan; Piano Concerto No 2 from Shostakovich with soloist Matt Dixon, winner of the 2019 Household Division Musician of the Year competition and Duel of the Fates by John Williams, featuring the Household Division Trombone Dectet. But our particular favourite was the acclaimed Fanfare Argenteus, written by Major Craig Hallatt who also composed our enigmatic Elergy to the War Horse. With the beautiful setting of Cadogan Hall, it promised an outstanding evening of musical pomp and grandeur – and it didn’t disappoint, celebrating the very best of our Nation’s proud heritage and tradition. Our grateful thanks to Giles Stibbe, OBE, MA (Hons) Director Household Cavalry Foundation for his kind invitation to attend.
