Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.
We were delighted to meet with the Mayor of the Royal Borough Councillor Paul Lion and the Lady Mayoress Mrs Laura Lion at the Guildhall in Windsor to present one of our limited edition maquettes, which they accepted on behalf of the people of Windsor and Maidenhead.
Poppy our magnificent War Horse sits atop a stone plinth at the top of Ascot High Street as a lasting reminder of the millions of horses, mules and donkeys who gave service and sacrifice in the First World War – not just from the UK but the Allied and Commonwealth countries too. Maquettes like this one – created by our wonderful sculptor Susan Leyland, and cast by Black Isle Bronze in Nairn, Scotland – have already been gifted to HM The Queen, to number 10 Downing Street and to Ascot Racecourse Authority, and it was always our intention to include the Royal Borough in this illustrious line up. Several generous supporters have also bought maquettes which has enabled us to invest in our Purple Poppy campaign to support our chosen equine and military charities. Councillor Lion thanked us on behalf of local residents and said the maquette was to be put on permanent display in York House, the Royal Borough’s Windsor headquarters.
